CITYSCAPE WITH ED REGGI

Ed Reggi was recently a guest on Steve Potter's radio show Cityscape which aired December 28th, 2007. Click the media player below to hear the discussion about the 2007 First Night New Year's Eve celebration in Grand Center.

Or you can visit KWMU's website for the entire show.
52ND CITY
Bill Chott while talking with writer and blogger Thomas Crone recently thanked Ed Reggi for paving the way in making St. Louis an improv community. Reggi loves working with Bill Chott and really send out his appreciation of Bill's statement.

See the entire blog here and check out Bill Chott's, The Improv Trick here.
BEST ACTING LESSONS
The People's Media Company have spoken, "Reggi offers the best acting around in St. Louis."

"It's true! I had taken several classes from Ed Reggi when I lived in St. Charles and I would say Mr. Reggi is one of the country's top acting teachers. (Yes, I said COUNTRY!) Run, don't walk to take his improvisational acting classes; it helped me land three roles on television, and even out here (in LA) they know his name. You can't go wrong with learning from a master like "Reggi" as they call him back home in St. Louis." - Declared by former student Sheila Obrien

Ed Reggi's is still offering classes in St. Louis and soon New York City.
LIVE AND IN PERSON
Fontbonne University featured an article on Ed Reggi (class of 1994) and everything he has done since he graduated the college in the early 90's.

"Ed Reggi makes people happy. Whether he's acting on stage, telling stories over Chinese food or hamming it up for a photo shoot, the guy has charisma. One of the most active and prolific forces on the local and regional improvisational theater scene, this Fontbonne alum shares his joy of creativity - as an actor, writer, director and teacher."

GEORGIA LOVES REGGI
Last winter, Reggi facilitated several Spolin Theatre workshops at the Georgia State Thespian Conference. This was Reggi's first time at the southern state event and he was overwhelmed with the quality and talented students. "Everyone was so eager to learn Spolin's work," cheered Reggi. "There was not this notion that improv meant comedy." The Georgia State Thespians are made up of dozens of Thespian Troupes across the southern state that come together just outside Atlanta. Over 3,000 teens, teachers and sponsors attended this years' 2006 Conference.

Ed teaches at several State Thespian Festivals and conferences throughout the school year. Reggi also instructs acting classes in St. Louis. He has exciting new projects for 2008, some of which include: a new movie project; traveling again to the Philippines to teach Spolin's work; and return travel to The London Globe Theater.
JEWISH LIGHT
The St. Louis Jewish Light recently featured a photo filled story on Ed Reggi collaborating with the St. Louis Television and Radio Channel Double Helix. KDHX (It's radio and TV call letters) is a community television and radio station serving the entire St. Louis metropolitan region. Reggi created and designed a very successful film making intensive geared toward junior and high school aged students. "The class is amazing, it fills up as soon as we announce it to the public," explained Reggi.

The course takes place during the late summer over a period of two-weeks. It includes the students writing, acting and shooting their short film. To read the article visit the Jewish Light.
CODE TO JOY
Former student recently published his own take on improv classes with Ed Reggi. Here is an excerpt from his website:

It's Ok To Fail: Just Fail Fast

The whole point of improvisation is to act on the fly, on the edge of failure. If you don't fail once in a while, then something isn't right.

In fact, there are games that improv performers play before practicing/learning that are intended to promote failure. Once you screw up, you're less likely to worry about it later. One game is "swish-bonk", where a group stands in a circle: someone shouts "swish" with an arm movement to the right. The recipient can swish to the right or "bonk" it back to the left. Variations, hijinx, and failure ensue.

Later, in an actual improv setting, a failed idea is ok: performers don't dwell on it. They keep things moving with a new idea.

This is reminiscent of two things:
  • The entrepreneurial spirit of IT, where failed ventures can be a badge of honour
  • The XP approach to design software, where we "embrace change". That is, we don't expect ideas to be correct, but we do want to correct them ASAP.

ADRIANNE FROST
Good friend of Reggi (and fellow improv actor) Adrianne Frost of MTV's BEST WEEK EVER, has a paperback book entitled "I Hate Other People's Kids," and Reggi says, "if you want to have a great laugh, order this book for Chanukah and Christmas."

PICK UP BILL CHOTT ON DVD
St. Louis Improviser Bill Chott made his debut as a lead in the highly controversial new Farrelly Brother's film starring Johnny Knoxville, The Ringer.

Bill Chott has taught improvisation at The Second City, Improv Olympic, Comedy Sportz and Colorado State University. In addition, Bill teaches workshops for both large corporations and people with disabilities. Bill has taught abroad in Denmark and the Netherlands. He also voices cartoons on Saturday Night Live and can be seen in the films Galaxy Quest, Dude Where's My Car?

"He is one of the funniest men I have seen in bubble wrap," says Ed Reggi. "What Bill is doing for St. Louis is putting us back on the comedy map. We have so many talented people right here in the heartland."
CHAPLIN: THE ROGUE BEHIND THE REELS
Ed Reggi was selected as one of the experts to introduce a movie at Webster University's, Chaplin: The rogue behind the reels. Legendary comedic film actor and producer brings vaudevillian, slapstick presence to Film Series for eight weeks. Reggi introduced the third film, Monsieur Verdoux, Chaplin's dark comedy about a deranged French gentleman who weds mature wealthy women with the single purpose to kill them for their money. The strange twist is that Chaplin's character is already married to a seriously ill lady whom he keeps in the countryside, oblivious to his darker side.

TEVYE RETURNS TO CEDAR STREET CENTER
Back by popular demand, the Paper Slip Theatre will be showcased as the fourth event in Ozark Actors Theatre's (OAT) 2007 Winter Season on Friday, March 9. This comedy troupe from the St. Louis area is certain to provide an evening of fun and laughter when they take the stage at Cedar Street Center, located at 701 N. Cedar in Rolla. Audience members are invited to come at 7 p.m. for pre-show light appetizers and an opportunity to meet the actors as they "warn up" for the hilarity that follows.

Under the direction of Ed Reggi, improvisation is at the heart of this troupe. Local theatre patrons may remember Reggi, who played Tevya in the 2004 OAT summer production of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, and will most certainly enjoy the opportunity to see his comedic talents. Reggi spent his teen days sneaking onto the set of the Bill Cosby Show to learn the ropes from the comic master, Cosby himself. "Since I started studying theater when I was a kid, there wasn't a time when I didn't do improv," said Reggi, founder of Paper Slip Theatre. Reggi, who paid his dues at the famed Second City in Chicago, travels internationally performing improvised plays and training actors and also teaches improv at the Center of Creative Arts in University City, where he's the theater program coordinator.

Improvisational comedy is a hilarious form of entertainment due to its spontaneous audience-interactive nature. According to Reggi, "It is powerful to be in the room with the act of creation. It's the opposite of seeing a favorite movie over and over. Whatever you see, it never will happen again. It's the act of creation, live." The Paper Slip Theatre is further committed to making all of their comedy clean, ensuring an evening of family-friendly fun on March 9. "We believe there are plenty of laughs to be found in life's little foibles and eccentricities, and we do not need to derive our comedy from foul language or any insensitive themes," stated Reggi.

General admission tickets for Comedy Night featuring the Paper Slip Theatre along with food and fun are $15 for adults and $10 for students 18 and under. The ticket includes light appetizers served beginning at 7:00 PM in addition to the show. OAT is pleased to offer a 20% discount to active military and their families. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the OAT Box Office. Box Office hours are from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM Monday through Friday and 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM on Saturday. For further information or to reserve a ticket by phone, call 573-364-9523 and leave a message for the Box Office. Tickets will also be sold at the door if seating is still available.

Tickets are also available at this time for the last event in OAT's 2007 Winter Season set for Friday, April 13. Scheduled for that date will be the popular Night of One Acts, produced in collaboration with the UMR Theatre Department as well as the Rolla Public School Drama students.

EMCEE AT THE ARTY PARTY

(Joan Lipkin and Ed Reggi, picture provided by www.blacktie-stlouis.com)

On May 15, 2005, YASTL held a cocktail reception at Finale, Clayton’s new restaurant and jazz club. 100 guests gathered to support Young Audiences of St. Louis.

Several of YASTL's most entertaining artists performed in the swank, state-of-the-art setting at the Finale. The cocktail reception featured a menu created by Finale's executive chef Jeff Constance, who is also the executive chef at J. Buck's. The cocktail reception followed by a showcase of the talented musicians, who work with YASTL to integrate the Arts into the curriculum of St. Louis schools.

After enjoying the sounds of some of our city's finest musical talents, Arty Party guests participated in an unforgettable live auction, led by local favorite and YASTL artist Ed Reggi. Even if guests didn’t place the winning bid… for a stay at a vacation home in Park City, Utah or tickets to St. Louis Arts events… Reggi's comedic personality made the auction an experience to remember.

Premium seating for the event was $150 per person, and select seating was priced at $100 per person. Arty Party proceeds will support Young Audiences of St. Louis' effort to help all children reach their potential through arts integration.

Young Audiences is part of a network of 32 Young Audiences chapters and affiliates nationwide. The first chapter was formed in Baltimore in 1950. Young Audiences of St. Louis (YASTL) was founded in 1958 and incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 1970. The 2002-03 year represents Young Audiences' 44th season in St. Louis.

A volunteer Board of Directors provides overall governance and leadership for Young Audiences. The Board is comprised of corporate and business leaders, educators and community volunteers. Six full-time and two part-time staff members handle the organization's day-to-day operations. A growing volunteer association provides assistance in many areas.

On the average, 82% of Young Audiences' programs are presented in the Greater St. Louis area. The organization also serves schools and community sites in Illinois and in the eastern half of Missouri.

For further information about Young Audiences of St. Louis please call 314-968-5554 or visit their website at www.yastl.org.

EVERYONE NEEDS TO TELL THEIR STORY
In 2005, Reggi toured the Philippines and met so many wonderful people. His workshops had him in front of Filippinos of all ages. His most inspirational moment was working with children from the Barrio's (really poor areas) who [to Reggi's findings] were quite natural at playing improv. "They understood the concept of being fully present and in the moment," commented Reggi. "Their stories were very real, organic and amazing. I was pleased to get the time to work with them, and I took home something I will never forget: the magic of theatre across cultural, language and religious borders. I am planning to return to the Islands of Water Lillies this Winter very soon."

Reggi is looking for an individual or organization to help sponsor and raise the financial support to pay for Reggi to return to the Philippines and teach the kids drama.

BLOCKING is working outside of agreement. It is the opposite of YESAND. When players disagree or argue they avoid the story, thus stall any possible relationship.
